Senior board appoints committees, chairmen

Committees and chairmen were appointed by the board of directors Jan. 20 at the monthly meeting of Senior Citizens of Marion County, Inc.

The executive committee has three officers and one member from each of the three commission districts.

Edwin Winter is chairman; Estelle McCarty, vice chairman; Joyce Kyle, secretary/treasurer; Reinhold Winter, District 1; Marlene Anduss, District 2; and Betty Ireland, District 3.

Committee appointments are Arlene Unruh, Outreach-Nutrition-Education (ONE); Estelle McCarty, health service providers; Betty Ireland, nominating, bylaws; Reinhold Winter, senior center committee; and Irvin Goertzen, transportation committee.

In other business:

— Kyle presented a treasurer's report. There is a balance of $80.32 in the regular account after $10.50 in expenses were paid, $750.40 in a savings account, $500 in a CD at Marion National Bank, and $10,319 in a CD at Community Bank, Burns. The silver-haired legislator account has a zero balance.

— Edwin Winter presented a request from Durham seniors to have a piano tuned. Decisions were postponed until the next meeting because there were no bids.

— Marilyn Geis, president of Marion Senior Center, requested assistance with the center's insurance. The premium had increased from the previous year — $940 to $1,224. Geis asked for $300-$400 in assistance. The board approved $300.

— Virginia Downing presented a request from Lehigh seniors for assistance in paying for termite treatment at the Lehigh facility. The total bill was $912 and the board approved $400 in assistance.

— Chair orders for Tampa and Marion senior centers will be discussed next month.

— LIEAP applications are due by March 31. The program provides assistance to those who qualify with heating bills.

— Tax assistance for senior citizens will be available at Marion Senior Center. Contact the center for more information.

— Mid-Cap is offering a winterization kit to eligible households. Those interested in applying should contact Lynn Unruh at (620) 382-8807 or (888) 877-5948, or at 104 1/2 North Fifth Street, Marion.

— Information on strokes was distributed.

— Transportation committee meeting will be March 8 or at the committee chairman's discretion.

The next meeting will be at 9:30 a.m. Feb. 17 at Florentine Senior Center, Florence.
