Senior center: Seniors have fun, learn hula at Hawaiian luau

By JANET BRYANT

Senior center reporter

We have been having a memorable month of July. I'm afraid expectations of fun and wearing costumes may be raised too high.

We had our Hawaiian luau July 26, complete with leis for everyone and flower clips for the women's hair. Madonna Schafers brought in a lot of decorations and Shirley Moore thought we needed pineapple slices with our meal, so she provided those. Henrietta Waner baked a special cake with coconut and a cherry on top.

Gloria Ash performed the Hawaiian wedding dance for us. She then taught some of us to hula. One of the hula students was highly uncoordinated. It was a wonderful, special day!

We welcomed Robin Jennison and entourage July 24 to meet, greet, and campaign for the Republican nomination for governor.

July 22 was Gorgeous Grandma Day. Did you celebrate?

Our National Day of the Cowboy was July 21 and was featured in the previous week's Marion County Record. I want to add that Shirley Moore brought a CD of music from the Prairie Rose that day and Madonna Schafers brought her animated "The Gambler" critter.

Cousin Day was July 24. Hopefully everyone has a favorite cousin with whom to share family stories.

Frances Kreutziger and Ralph Popp celebrated birthdays in the midst of all this hullabaloo. Joyce Kellison brought a grandfather clock jigsaw puzzle that becomes a standing clock when completed. Blanche Cowan brought the Chinese-motif outfit husband Charlie had brought her from Hawaii.

Come join us Aug. 9 when we will have a country-western sing-along with Madonna Schafers, Sue Clough, and Shirley Bowers.
