Senior citizen board approves transportation policy, new chairs

Senior Citizens of Marion County, Inc., met Dec. 17 at Marion Senior Center.

Al Schmidt reported that Kansas Department of Transportation has mandated public transportation providers have written policies for their agency. Additional requirements were added by Marion County Department for Elderly staff and board members.

Marilyn Geis, president of Marion Senior Center, reported the carpet at the senior center needed to be cleaned. She received several bids but preferred the board choose a bid from Clean Supreme of Durham for $402 with $200 being paid from the elderly budget. An additional $26 will be spent to clean the office areas.

Noreen Weems, director of Marion County Department for Elderly, reported estimates she had received for replacing folding chairs in the centers. Navrat's Office Products of Emporia was the bid of choice at $27 per chair. The board approved the expenditure for 168 chairs, not to exceed $28 per chair if the chairs meet Weems' satisfaction. Marion County Commission will give final approval.

A certificate of deposit was renewed at 3.16 percent for 25 months at Community National Bank of Burns. Interest of $1,126, earned from the renewed CD was placed in a savings account at Marion National Bank. The interest will be added to a donation of $1,435 from Flint Hills Foundation.

The total amount in the savings account will cover the annual funding of the four nutrition centers and seven senior centers. The nutrition centers that serve five meals per week receive $200 and the senior centers receive $100 annually.

Schmidt was recognized by the board for four terms in office. He received a certificate for the 12 years of service. Estelle McCarty, serving a term on the board, resigned because she moved out of district three. Betty Ireland has agreed to fill McCarty's position.

Irvin Goertzen was elected a county board member for district three. Edwin Winter and Marlin Bartel were installed for district one, and Margaret Jirak was installed for district two. All will serve a three-year term.

Election for the silver-haired legislator will be held in January.

Tom Smith, chief executive officer of St. Luke Hospital & Living Center, was introduced to the board. He spoke about his vision for the county and St. Luke Hospital being the first hospital of choice.

Janet Herzet, director of Marion County Home Care, reported the home care agency had celebrated 25 years of service.

Lanell Hett, transportation coordinator and secretary, reported eight trips for the month of December, two being health related. The next transportation committee meeting will be Jan. 12.
