Senior citizens board approves requests from Ramona, Goessel

Two mill levy requests were approved Sept. 16 by Senior Citizens of Marion County, Inc.

The board met at the Durham Community Building for its monthly meeting.

Roof repairs for $287 were approved for Ramona Senior Center, and $500 for Goessel Senior Center to help pay for the building's insurance.

A request was made to replace floor tile at Hillsboro Senior Center but cost estimates were requested by the board before considering approval.

In other business:

— More than 40 county residents were planning to attend a senior fair Sept. 20 at Salina.

— Pamela Johnson Betts, secretary of Kansas Department on Aging, will be a guest speaker Oct. 20 at the annual meeting.

Julie Govert Walter, executive director of North Central-Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging, also will attend.

— Robert Carlton, executive director of Central Home Care & Hospice, reported the Tree of Life for Marion County will be located in Central Park, Marion. A tree lighting ceremony will be at 7 p.m. Nov. 28.

— Janet Herzet, director of Marion County Home Care, reported the 11th annual Women's Wellness Workshop will be held Nov. 5. The keynote speaker will be Kathy (Goodin) Bosch.

— Flu vaccines will be available the first of November by Marion County Home Care and the county health department.

— A update on Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Program was presented by Virginia Downing.

— Lanelle Hett, secretary and transportation coordinator, reported 14 trips during September; two were health related.

The transportation committee met Sept. 14 and discussed rising fuel costs. If fuel costs continue to increase, the suggested contribution amounts for use of the vans may be monitored.

The next transportation meeting is Nov. 9.

Seniors plan

annual meeting

The 45th annual meeting of Senior Citizens of Marion County, Inc. will be noon Oct. 20 at Marion Senior Center, 309 S. Third Street, Marion.

Special guest will be Pamela Johnson-Betts, Kansas Department on Aging Secretary.

Marion High School Singers and Margaret Vinduska will provide musical entertainment.

Reservations must be made and tickets purchased by Oct. 17. Tickets are $4 and can be purchased at any of the 11 senior centers in the county and Marion County Department for Elderly office.

Genealogy lock-in

is set for Oct. 8

A genealogy lock-in will be held from 6 p.m. to midnight Oct. 8 at Emporia Public Library.

Those attending are asked to bring a snack or covered dish.

The event is sponsored by the library and the Flint Hills Genealogical Society.
