Seniors approve repairs to van

Repairs to a public transportation van were approved June 17 at a meeting of Senior Citizens of Marion County, Inc. at Burns Community Building.

Water was leaking in the passenger door of the 1998 Dodge Caravan. An estimate of $430 was submitted by Marion Body Shop to repair it.

Funds from the operating budget will be used for the repairs.

In other business:

— Goessel Senior Center requested $150 from the mill levy for a vacuum sweeper. The sweeper retails for $300 and would be purchased from Mid-West Sewing & Vacuum Sweeper Center, Hutchinson.

— A vacancy in the district needs to be filled. Magdalen Dvorak, nominating bylaws committee chairman, will make a report at the July meeting.

— July 1 is the deadline for nominating senior citizen volunteers 60 years old and older as "first mates."

One person will be chosen to represent the county at the Senior Fair in September at Salina.

— More than 500 people have had contact with Central Home Care & Hospice, Newton, regarding end-of-life issues.

Administrator Robert Carlton reported the agency also has assisted people with living wills and durable powers of attorney for health care.

— Seniors were warned of scams by Gary Gooszen, field representative, North Central-Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging.

— Virginia Downing reported on part D Medicare.

— Howard Collett, silver hair legislator, presented a legislative report.

— State vehicle inspections for the two vans will be July 18.

The next meeting will be July 15 at Goessel.
