Shawmar Oil & Gas purchases Cardie Oil years ago

Personnel, services will not change

Staff reporter

It's business as usual at Cardie Oil, Inc. of Tampa.

Everything's the same — personnel, services, products, and most importantly the name. The only thing that has changed is the ownership.

An oil and gas explorer and producer, Shawmar Oil & Gas Company of Marion, purchased the company and took over operations Sept. 15.

"Everything is going exactly the same," said Jim Cloutier, president of Shawmar Oil & Gas.

Craig Settle, a financial officer for Shawmar, will oversee operations as president at Cardie Oil.

Settle has an engineering degree from Kansas State University and a master of business administration degree from Southern Methodist University, Dallas.

He has been with Shawmar Oil & Gas since 2004. He and wife Blythe reside in Newton, and have two children, Colin, 5, and Cayley, 3.

The companies actually are owned by an employee stock option plan, Cloutier explained, which are comprised of employees and Cloutier.

Diversification in the changing world of oil and gas is a necessity for companies to remain viable.

"This seemed like a natural fit," said Cloutier. "This will take us from the well head all the way to consumer."

Shawmar Oil & Gas produces oil and gas products which goes to refineries. Cardie Oil then markets refined products to consumers.

Cloutier was confident in the purchase of the retail company.

"Cardie is a stable company," he said. He saw it as a good opportunity and that clinched the deal.

Cardie Oil has been in operation since 1939, owned and operated by Norman, Earl, and Paul Mueller.

Earl Mueller has been with the company since 1957, and has been president and manager since 1971.

It's important to Cloutier to continue providing quality products and services with the Cardie Oil name.

"It's a name people know and trust," Cloutier said. "It's worked this long and I'm sure it will continue to work."
