Sign up to participate in Chingawassa Days festivities

Don't want to just stand on the sidelines and watch events at this year's Chingawassa Days?

Sign up to participate in a hot dog eating contest or bed races or try your luck at playing poker or a duck race.

There are many activities from which to choose. All will be held June 7.

A horseshoe pitching tournament will be held from 8 to 11 a.m. Participants may register at the park prior to the competition. A festival button or $5 day pass is required for the entry fee.

If running is more like it, the Case and Son Rhino Run begins at 8 a.m. A 5k run and two-mile run/walk is planned. Participants may pre-register at Case and Son Insurance office, 220 E. Main, Marion, or beginning at 7:15 a.m. at the north end of Central Park. A $10 fee is required which provides a T-shirt to all participants.

Maybe it's time to polish the classic car and show it at the Lions Club Car Show. Registration begins at 8 a.m. with the show being held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. along the street by Marion County Courthouse, Fourth and Williams streets. The entry fee is $10.

A poker run will begin at 8 a.m. with registration at Carlsons' Grocery, 1121 E. Main. An entry fee is required.

Get a team together for the Tampa State Bank Bed Rock 'n' Run bed races, which begin at 9:45 a.m. on Main Street in downtown Marion. Teams can win prizes for speed and best decorated beds. Register at Tampa State Bank, 1100 E. Main, Marion. The deadline to sign up is May 30.

Support St. Luke Hospital and have a chance to win prizes by "adopting" ducks for the Dinky Duck Race. Ducks may be adopted at St. Luke Hospital prior to the race, at the hospital's web site www.slhmarion.org, or Saturday morning. Ducks are $5 each, six for $25, 12 for $50, and 24 for $100. Prizes include 30 pounds of meat from Burdick Meat Market, Rolling Hills Zoo passes, $50 gift certificate from Carlsons' Grocery, and a 30-minute massage from St. Luke Integrated Health Care. The race begins at 10:45 a.m. Saturday.

Marion Historical Museum again will sponsor Marion's Amazing Race. Participants will meet at 11:15 at the museum and finish at the chamber stage at Central Park. Entry fee is $20 per team of two. Ages 17 and older may enter. Call Gary Ewert at (620) 382-3498 for more information and to sign up. Prize money is $100 for first, $75 for second, and $50 for third.

Flint Hills Embroidery will host the popular Texas Hold 'Em Tourney. Registration will begin at 11 a.m. with the tournament beginning at noon. Participants must be 18 years of age and older and wearing a Chingawassa Days button. The event is limited to the first 100.

For younger festival participants, PrairieLand Partners will sponsor a pedal tractor pull. Pre-registration is at noon with the competitions beginning at 12:30 p.m.

A rock/paper/scissors tournament, sponsored by Tampa State Bank, will begin at 1 p.m. Just show up and play.

Midlands Farm Services/Scully Estates will sponsor games for children of all ages. No entry fees required, just show up and play.

Marion Police Department and Marion County Sheriff's Department will sponsor a dodge ball tournament. Pre-registration is required. Contact Marion Police Department at (620) 382-2651 to register.

If eating is your game, sign up to participate in the Carlsons' Grocery Weenie Slam hot dog eating contest. Pre-register at Carlsons' Grocery or from 1 to 2:30 p.m. the day of the competition. The contest begins at 2:45 p.m.

A concert button, $20 until May 25 and $30 after that, or $5 Saturday pass is required to participate or attend the events. Most events will be held at Central Park, downtown Marion, unless otherwise noted.
