Small town, big city show

Marion may be a small town, but it sure knows how to put on a big show. This past weekend I attended my first Chingawassa Days festival and was impressed.

Chingawassa is an interesting hybrid. Part old-time fun festival and part big city concert, the weekend event offered a little something for every age.

It's exciting to see how well this event is supported by local and area residents. The park was busy from the time the gates opened until they closed.

I especially was impressed by the performance of Little River Band. A fan from way back, I first saw the band in concert in the 1970s. Saturday's performance did not disappoint. In fact, I thought this most recent performance was super. Based on the screams of the crowd — which filled most of Central Park — I think they would agree.

Congratulations to the Chingawassa committee for spearheading such a great weekend of fun. Chingawassa is a first rate festival.

On an unrelated note, I also would like to extend my congratulations to the cast, crew, directors and all associated with Marion High School's fall production of "The Wizard of Oz," The musical won three Jester awards from Music Theatre of Wichita.

As a former high school "theater person," I remember the hard work that went into putting on a dramatic production. The productions I was involved in were OK but nowhere near the caliber of those produced at MHS. The only award we might have won would have been "most bloopers in a single performance."

Here's to everyone who supports the fine arts in USD 408. May they continue to flourish.
