Snow provides winter wonderland

Marion County residents dug out Sunday from six to seven inches of snow that fell Saturday.

Coming on the heels of several inches of sleet and snow mixture the previous weekend, the snow began to fall Saturday morning and quickly piled up. Temperatures hovered around the freezing mark which made for a picturesque display of a winter wonderland.

Kansas Department of Transportation crews were busy Saturday and Sunday clearing roadways.

Marion County crews went out early Sunday morning and worked until Sunday afternoon.

Marion city crews cleared some streets on Saturday and most on Sunday.

Winter weather made traveling difficult which resulted in a fatality accident in the county.

Don L. Burgett Jr., 56, Junction City, was killed Saturday morning on K-15, 16 miles north of the U.S.-56/K-15 intersection, when his northbound 2005 Chevrolet pickup was struck by a southbound 1999 Chevrolet pickup driven by Jacob L. Ryan, 18, Newton, when it slide on ice and struck the Burgett vehicle head-on.

Kansas Highway Patrol reported Ryan was not injured and Burgett was transported by Tampa EMS to Hillsboro Community Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Matthew L. Burgett, 18, Junction City, was a passenger in the Burgett vehicle and was transported by Hillsboro EMS to HCMC.

Marion County Sheriff's Department reported three accidents but no major traffic tie-ups.
