LETTERS:   Society succeeds in spite of government years ago

To the Editor:

Bill Holdeman said it right. Let's "get our heads out of the sand" and realize that individualism and self-perseverance bring prosperity and security to a community.

Holdeman talks about the need for ideas. What kind of ideas? Ideas that create more taxes? Ideas for more regulations? Ideas of more control? Isn't that what government is all about? Have we looked at the record?

Holdeman talked about having the "courage" to come up with ideas, ideas, ideas. Which for government is taxes, regulations, and control! Is government a solver of problems or is government the problem?

Get your head out of the sand, as Holdeman says, and let the people create and prosper, as was given to us.

Isn't our greatness because of those who, because of the oppression of the (British) government, established a government that guarantees individual liberty and responsibility to provide for oneself without interference? No matter how you look at it, it's still the people that make things work, despite the government.

The achievements noted by economic development director Jami Williams were not because of government but despite it! Do we really believe that government can create prosperity? Is our nation about Big Government telling us what we can and can't do? Can government really create ideas? Why are socialist governments around the world failing? Isn't that the issue?

So what we have, despite government, isn't from the government but from individual initiative.
