Softball team salvages week with split against Halstead; team now sits at 3-5

Sports reporter

After dropping a doubleheader April 11 at Hillsboro, the Marion-Florence/Peabody-Burns Warriors split two games Friday with the Halstead Dragons.

Sonja Steinborn recorded the victory Thursday in game one, pitching a complete game and striking out four in the 11-10 victory.

Erica Geis was 3-4 at the plate, while Kari Tajchman and Lauren Helmer each added two hits.

It didn't look good for MFPB as it trailed 8-2 heading into the fifth inning. But five hits and seven runs later the Warriors led 9-8.

Third baseman Kara Holt had a two-run single in the inning, and Steinborn, Tajchman, and Helmer added RBI-groundouts.

The Warriors scored two insurance runs in the sixth to lead 11-8. It turned out it was exactly what they need as the Dragons scored two in the final inning. Even thought it wasn't pretty, Waner will take the victory.

The Warriors came out on fire in the second game scoring in the first four innings. Halstead was hot as well, and the teams were tied at six with three innings to play.

Unfortunately for MFPB Halstead's bats stayed hot while the Warriors did not, as Halstead cruised to the 13-7 victory.

Frankie Clarke and Kristen Waner nailed four of the team's five hits, while Allie Maddox scored two runs for the Warriors.

At Hillsboro April 11 the Warriors ran into a hot Hillsboro Trojans squad.

Kari Tajchman finally got the Warriors on board in the fourth inning when she scored on an error to cut the lead to 3-1. Hillsboro stretched the lead to four with two runs in the fifth. The Warriors threatened in the top of the sixth with runners on second and third and just one out.

Helmer knocked in a run with a groundout, but it was the final run the Warriors would score. The Trojans added two in the inning, taking the game 7-2.

Tajchman was 2-3 with a run scored.

MFPB fell apart in game two, losing 16-1 to the Trojans. Steinborn was the bright spot at the plate recording a double and scoring a run.

The Warriors played Tuesday at Hesston and travel Friday to Sterling to take on the Black Bears.
