Spirit of Christmas lives on with elderly

Staff reporter

Christmas traditions are important to most Marion residents.

As we age, the traditions can change — especially when people move to retirement homes such as assisted living and long term care facilities.

In an effort to keep traditions alive and for residents to anticipate the arrival of Christmas, local care units offer a variety of activities.

At St. Luke Living Center, the residents have been planning for Christmas for several weeks.

The entrance to the home is decorated as are trees and individual rooms.

The big Christmas party is planned for the evening of Dec. 22 when families of residents are invited to a meal. Santa Claus will visit and distribute gifts to residents.

Local residents can "adopt" a resident by purchasing an item. Not every living center resident has family nearby so the adoption program provides gifts to all residents.

Numerous groups of carolers have serenaded residents with festive tunes.

Special activities also are planned on Christmas Day.

Anyone wanting to donate items for residents can contact Khrista Branson or Sue Gutsch at (620) 382-3117.

At Marion Assisted Living, various Christmas craft projects have been completed with more planned.

Christmas movies are shown and popcorn is served.

The big Christmas party is planned for Dec. 21 with a visit from Santa Claus and gift exchange.

Director Jennifer Gaines said most of the residents are able to attend family events on Christmas Day so no special events are planned.

Golden Living Center, formerly Marion Manor, also has had numerous activities for residents.

A door decorating contest is being held and Spirit Week is planned for next week where staff and residents can dress up in various attire.

Various caroling groups also have visited the facility and youth groups have provided gifts.

On Christmas Day, residents will enjoy breakfast and then gather around the Christmas tree to open gifts. Santa also will visit.

Anyone wanting to donate items for residents can contact Robyn Kukuk at (620) 382-2191.
