Split decision: Warriors lose one, win one at Eureka

Sports reporter

It's been an up and down year for the Marion-Florence Peabody-Burns wrestling team. Head coach Chad Adkins is hoping for the former the rest of the season.

After placing six wrestlers, but having no first-place finishers, Jan. 28 at the Mid-Central Activities Association League meet, Adkins was happy with how his team responded Thursday at the Eureka invitational.

After losing a close match to Eureka, the Warriors pounded Remington, 54-18.

Adkins knew the Eureka match would be a challenge.

"They're a good team," he said. "They're are the best team we've faced this year."

Eureka features three-time state qualifier Nash Burrton at 112 pounds, and plenty of other wrestlers with talent.

Wyatt Bechtel pinned MFPB's Hank Collett in 15 seconds at 125 pounds, after Levi Carpenter was pinned in 45 seconds at 130 pounds, the Warriors trailed, 30-0.

Then came Thomas McGee at 135 pounds. The youngster battled the full six minutes with Garrett Alley before outlasting him, 4-2.

"He (McGee) wrestled very well tonight," Adkins said. "It's the best he wrestled all year."

Consecutive pins from Charlie Holub, John Barr III, Gavin Moore, and a forfeit at 160 pounds, enabled MFPB to close the gap to 30-27.

Team victory leader Casey Nelson was next at 171. He battled Joe Day through the first two periods, almost pinning him before the two fell out-of-bounds.

Nelson then faltered in the third when Day flipped him on his back and pinned him.

"Casey just made a mistake," Adkins said. "It happens, but we can't get pinned. I've been preaching it all year."

Adam Depler secured three points for the Warriors, a forfeit at 215 gave Eureka six more, and Shawn Britton won 7-2 at 275 to claim the final three points of the match.

It wasn't quite enough however, as the Warriors fell, 42-33.

Unfortunately for MFPB, the same story of one match making the difference happened again.

"Right now we are just one match away," Adkins said. "We've beaten some good teams this year, and we've hung in with every team we've wrestled."

In the Remington match, MFPB trailed 12-6 early, but ran off 24 straight points to jump ahead for good, 30-6.

McGee gave MFPB a 15-12 lead with a 8-6 overtime victory at 135 pounds against Andrew Price. He had led the whole match until Price tied it with a takedown with one second remaining in regulation.

McGee returned the favor with a takedown in overtime. Adkins had some advice for McGee in the extra session.

"He just knew he better work his butt off," he said with a smile.

Holub claimed a 5-3 victory, Barr III finished his night with two pins in a combined one minute, 55 seconds with a 51-second pin at 145 pounds, and Gavin Moore recorded a pin at 160 in 1:06, to finish off the 24-0 run.

Leading 36-18 Nelson bounced back in strong fashion, claiming a pin in just 45 seconds at 189 pounds.

A forfeit and Britton's second victory of the night sealed the 54-18 victory against the Broncos.

Adkins knows his team will have to wrestle like it did against Remington the rest of the year to have the confidence at regionals.

"We just have to get after it all the time, and we can't afford any mistakes."

The Warriors wrestle Thursday at the Lyons double dual and are off this weekend.
