BIRTHS:   St. Luke Living Center years ago

The living center bakers used a recipe of Betty Wagner of Hanover, Ind., to make honey bars Friday morning which included a delicious honey glaze icing spread on the warm bars.

After lunch, Pat Smith and Bill Schimpf were here for an afternoon of "traditional" bingo.

Khrista and our big red machine popped corn Saturday for our consumption and we topped off the afternoon by playing candy-bar bingo.

Our Sunday afternoon guest minister was Josh Wesner of Emmanuel Baptist Church. Rev. Wesner was accompanied by his guitar and these two accompanied us for the hymn singing.

David Bowers' family was here to celebrate David's 85th birthday. They brought and enjoyed a one o'clock dinner together in our small dining room. Following the church service, we all were invited to drop in and share birthday cake, ice cream, nuts, coffee, and iced tea and to offer the "birthday boy" our best wishes.

We celebrated Memorial Day with a noon hot dog cookout complete with ice cream bars and sandwiches for dessert. Our more solemn observance took place in the afternoon when a full van of residents took a trip to cemeteries in Marion, Pilsen, and Lincolnville.

During book club Tuesday morning, after a non-stop struggle, grasshoppers wiped out the young pioneers' entire wheat crop. David left to find work back east while Molly and baby David John remained in the dugout home to save the claim.

We had a busy, good time that afternoon cutting out colorful letters to create a "thank you from the bottom of our hearts" bulletin board display in honor of our spirited, freckled activity director Khrista, her husband Rick Branson, and our canine friend Toby.

During this creative activity we took time to read a delightful monologue Irene Kinsey brought to us entitled, "Strange Old Lady," by Madeline Mila.

Some living center bakers mixed up two cakes Thursday forenoon. After lunch the "frosters" arrived to put the final touch to the cooled butter chocolate and strawberry flavored cakes.

The words "birthday party" surely rang a bell as the dining room began filling with party-goers by 2:30. This month, milestones were reached by three gentlemen: Dean Batt, Henry Sklenar, and David Bowers, and two women, Irma Reznicek and Irene Brooks.

Irma Benda of Pilsen and Kristi Wright and children of Emporia helped serve the cakes, ice cream, coffee, and iced tea to a large group.

During our afternoon cake preparations we watched as CMA Machelle, scissors in hand, trimmed our grass-heads' "hair." One of the grass-head girls received a cute top-of-the-head ponytail "do."
