Juggling this week's baking schedule to a different day, a standby leader and no cookies didn't seem to unsettle anyone. The living center bakers, "coached" by Amanda, on Thursday morning made a double batch of banana nut mini muffins.

Thursday also was Pearl Baxter's birthday and that afternoon her friends, Margaret Cook, Evelyn Hett, Willard Hett, Dawn Hett and family, Bertie Pritz, and Jared and Emily Hague hosted a celebration in her honor. We all were invited to share the cakes, chocolate and angel food, vanilla and chocolate ice cream, a large bowl of strawberries, nuts, and candy.

Lois Winter pulled double duty Friday using her piano talent and beautiful voice for an hour of hymn singing in the morning. At 2:30 she returned to call bingo for a roomful of devotees. Our wonderful volunteers are sincerely appreciated.

Allison got out the cards and played penny ante with residents Saturday afternoon. Although there were no prizes awarded this time, it was fun to watch the pennies "come and go."

Kristi Wright, Abby, Elizabeth, and Jake used a summer vacation afternoon Monday to help us make butterflies from coffee filters using clothespins and pipe cleaners. Many of the colorful insects can be seen on a large hanging plant in our dining room. Others seem to have made their way into residents' rooms.

Jake Wright, who is 11, also entertained us with some oboe music — not an easy instrument to play. This always-welcome family lives in Emporia and Phyllis Enos is the children's grandmother.

While the Wilder parents took a week's vacation visiting relatives (10 miles away), Eliza Jane, Royal, Almanzo, and Alice ate a lot of watermelon, cake, and homemade ice cream, using all the white sugar. The Tuesday group finds this series of books absolutely delightful.

Representatives of the hospital auxiliary, Rosemary Garrard, Iris Summers, Penny Marler, and Judy and Wayne Reno brought homemade iced banana bar cookies, no-bake chocolate peanut butter cookies, Oreos, a plate of sugar-free cookies, plus slices of cheese and snack crackers. This monthly visit always is enjoyed, as much for the refreshments as the fellowship.

Shirley Bowers was here Friday morning for hymn singing, then the lunch bunch too the van trip to Peabody to join other seniors at the center there for the noon meal. Outings also were taken to Hillsboro for shopping and sightseeing.
