We celebrated residents' October birthdays Thursday afternoon. Chocolate sheet cakes, decorated with corn shocks and pumpkins we had made earlier in the month, were served with chocolate chip ice cream, coffee, and iced tea. Residents celebrating birthdays were Alice Van Buren, Happy Slifer, Veva Navrat, and Olinda Meier.

The Rev. Carl Helm of Marion Christian Church was our guest minister Sunday afternoon. We were happy to have Mrs. Helm, Lou Roberts, Margaret Tice, and Donna Hayen as additional guests and appreciated a pianist accompanying the singing of hymns.

A group of young women, members of the Marion High School chapter of FCCLA (Family, Career, Community Leaders of America), have been visiting us every Monday after school. While here, they've been doing various activities with residents. This week the girls planned an evening cookout and grilled hot dogs and made s'mores. Many residents had never experienced those sweet campfire treats and now know how the goodies got their name. The president of the organization is Megan Schmidt and their sponsor is Myrta Billings.

What seemed bright and early Tuesday morning, 9:40 to be exact, a large, yellow, Marion-Florence USD#408 bus pulled up in front of our facility. Approximately 40 first graders, along with instructors Anita Hancock and Charlotte Waner, filed into the halls. These youngsters brought original greeting cards for each resident and sang "Happy Birthday" to Happy Slifer, who happened to have turned 85 that day. We also were entertained with songs the children had learned in school, some in connection with Columbus Day.
