Oct. 4-10

Khrista Branson substituted for Dick Pracht during Wednesday morning prayer group time. Even though we are "creatures of habit," it's part of life to have routines change now and then.

Thursday afternoon was the day set for the monthly "bash" for all St. Luke employees with birthdays in October. It was held in the large dining room. We were served ice cream and coffee. As an extra treat, Kay Navrat brought mini-cupcakes in honor of her mother Veva's birthday which was Oct. 10.

Fall frenzy is what we labeled the activity later that day. We crumpled newspaper and stuffed it into a shirt, sweater, trousers, pillowcases, and gloves. Abracadabra — we had a happy couple to form the focus of the fall display at our front entrance. Joann Fitzpatrick was a big help and Fern Palmer and her friend Marlene Bernhardt also joined us. Some straw bales and dried sunflowers and other foliage were added. In keeping with the fall theme, we were served freshly-squeezed apple cider. Our project isn't complete but it's a good start.

If you're looking an aroma to enhance your home, may we suggest oatmeal scotchies — cookies as good to eat as they smell. This was a new recipe for our Friday morning bakers and we decided it's a "keeper."

Rev. Josh Wesner of Emmanuel Baptist Church of Marion was our guest minister Sunday afternoon. He brought his guitar and sang hymns.

We got "prettied up" Monday morning. Pearl Thompson, Olinda Meier, and Amelia Vinduska played cards with volunteer Marie Navrat early in the afternoon. At about 3 p.m., we invaded the dining room/kitchen and made cakes to be served at our residents' monthly birthday party held later in the week.

Everyone enjoyed the visit and refreshments Tuesday afternoon provided by St. Luke Hospital Auxiliary. Perhaps it was the rainy weather, but coffee, cranberry bread, trail mix, and no-bake cookies tasted good, and the conversation was so welcome. Thank you, Jean Case, Janice Case, and Lavonne Hannaford.

As a post-script, we need to share how much we've missed the attention of two of our faithful volunteers — Iva Unruh and Ellen Darrow. These women have taken some time off to recuperate from health issues and we hope to soon welcome them back.
