St. Luke Living center: Residents share Fourth of July memories

By GLADYS MANN

Church service was brought by the Christian church.

Monday, July 4th, our great Independence Day, we got freedom of religion and freedom of speech. We had special activities. A woman came and played three notes on the piano. We would guess the name of the tune. Then she played the song for us. We ate watermelon and homemade ice cream.

At noon there was a picnic lunch. The men cooked wieners on the grill in the courtyard. We had potato salad, baked beans, chips of all kinds, pop, and watermelon. We enjoyed the day. Later Sue Gutsch read some articles on Independence Day then each one told how they spent the day in their childhood. Many of us had not heard of firecrackers. The neighbors would have horse races straight down the road. Some had pacers. They were beautiful to watch.

Pretty up day and a popcorn party was held Tuesday.

Prayer group was Wednesday with Dick Pracht. In the afternoon the Marion County Record was read.

Thursday was an hour of hymn singing with David and Shirley Bowers. Khrista Branson took five residents out to lunch, then short outings over the countryside.

Friday morning was our regular cookie baking time with Sue Gutsch. Peanut butter cookies were made and enjoyed. The afternoon was spent playing bingo with Magdalen Dvorak. She always brings her delicious prune and apricot kolaches.

We enjoyed polka and waltz music Saturday morning provided by Gene Vinduska on the accordion and his son, Mark on the drums. They play so well together. We wish Mark would come more often. I know it's a big task to move that drum set and the weather isn't always nice. Drums can't be taken out in damp air. But Mark, we really appreciate you when you come.

The afternoon was spent watching video movies. When the weather is nice, several spend a lot of time sitting outside watching traffic go by. It is interesting to see so many kinds of vehicles. If you have nothing to do come visit a resident at the living center. We all get so lonesome and like to hear what's going on outside.
