State makes determination in suspicious infant death

The Kansas Attorney General's office has released its findings from an investigation regarding the death of infant William Stevens Jr. of Peabody.

According to investigator Rick Guinn of the AG's office, the death is considered a "possible tragic accident."

According to Guinn, an autopsy was conducted by a forensic pathologist who has extensive expertise in child deaths.

"The pathologist found that the father's version of events surrounding the death was consistent with the medical findings," he said.

The AG's office has come to the conclusion that there is insufficient evidence to bring any criminal action at this time. The case is considered closed at this time.

Guinn said that autopsies are required any time there are suspicious circumstances surrounding a death.

The five-week-old baby died Feb. 17 at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, after being injured while in the care of his father at the family home in Peabody.

The official cause of the baby's death was undetermined.
