Summer employee approved for county appraiser s office

Marion County Commission approved a part-time seasonal employee May 31 for the county appraiser's office.

County appraiser Cindy Magill said there was an individual who had previously worked in the office and is available. Accrued compensatory time is adding up for appraiser office employees, said Magill, because of changes in the office.

It was explained that six staff members in the appraiser's office work a 37.5 hour work week and comp time isn't accrued until the employee has worked 40 hours per week.

Magill said part of the overtime is due to state requirements of more in-depth analysis for land values.

Commission chairman Dan Holub asked if employees from other departments could be used. Magill said it could be done and has been. She suggested the department heads establish a policy.

Holub asked if county prisoners could be used. County clerk Carol Maggard said some citizens were concerned about seeing prisoners on courthouse property.

Magill also reminded the commission that the office previously had eight positions, now only seven are filled.

Commissioner Randy Dallke said Magill needed a year to get acclimated to the position and personnel but after that period of time he expected a remedy to the situation.

Magill responded that she was hired into a situation where all of the knowledge was at the top (appraiser and assistance appraiser). She is in the process of changing that situation and training employees.
