Superintendent Leiker talks about rising fuel prices

USD 408 superintendent Lee Leiker discussed the rising fuel prices Monday with board members.

He acknowledged that rising prices will effect everyone.

"We want our students to be warm," he said.

Leiker said if prices stay the same there could be a $10,000 increase in heating costs, and increases could be as much as $20-$25,000 if prices continue to climb.

Still, Leiker wanted to make it clear the budget was OK.

"We will still make it through the school year whether we do anything about it or not," he said.

Leiker also said there could be a $7,500-$10,000 increase in motor fuel costs, but still wants students to learn and be active.

It is possible the distances of some field trips will be taken into consideration, but he is not suggesting any cuts as of now.

"I just want to be pro-active and let the board be aware," Leiker said.

The district is trying to limit the amount of vehicles it takes on field trips and athletic events, but the schedule that is already set will remain.
