Surprise twister touches down near Lost Springs

Pete Peterson and his wife, Janice, of rural Burdick were on their way to Lost Springs for supper at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday when they ran into some very strong wind gusts.

A storm system was moving through central Kansas and watches were out for possible violent weather.

Driving along the Burdick road, Pete commented on the wind and drove on, not thinking any more about it.

Friday afternoon Pete went to his property which is located one mile east of U.S.-56/77 from the Lost Springs corner and one mile south and discovered that his big machine shed was gone.

Debris was everywhere, and sheets of metal were scattered out for some distance to the northeast.

Five large evergreen trees in a nearby shelter belt were broken off and one was uprooted.

Two other small, old wooden buildings in the area were untouched.

Pete said he was fortunate because he had been planning to store his farm machinery in the 54x72-foot shed the previous weekend but had put it off. The only major items destroyed were a seed cleaner and sprayer.
