Tabor College releases Learning in Retirement schedule

Tabor College, Hillsboro, begins its 60th semester of the Learning in Retirement program with a presentation Monday by Jacob Marshall of Peabody and Cheryl Christian of Hillsboro.

"A Cut Above the Ordinary: Printing and Soapmaking," is the title of the program in which Marshall and Christian will speak about their entrepreneurial endeavors in printing and soapmaking.

Coffee will be served at 9:30 a.m. followed by the program at 10 a.m. at the Wohlgemuth Music Education Center on the Tabor College campus.

Cost is $15 per person or $28 per couple for the semester. Each session is $4 each at the door.

Those who have not attended before may come as guests one time free of charge.

Other programs

— March 6 — "Building Habitat Houses for Humanity." Dr. Wilmer Harms of Newton, who has helped build seven Habitat projects, will bring slides and his tool belt to show attendees this worthwhile adventure.

— March 13 — "Experiences at Ground Zero." While living in the state of New York, Dr. Lawrence Ressler, vice president of academics and student development at Tabor College, organized teams that served in the aftermath of the attack on the World Trade Center. He will share lessons learned as he worked among the smoldering rubble and with grieving families.

— March 20 — "Curry and Rice with Mennonite Brethren in India." Tabor faculty member Dr. Lynn Jost, with his group of Tabor students and interested Hillsboro people, recently returned from a three-week study tour. He will share the group's experiences.

— March 27 — "Family Folklore: Black Sheep and Kissing Cousins." Peggy Goertzen, Tabor College archivist, will inspire audience members to study genealogy and discover unique family stories.

— April 3 — "Buffalo Spirits." Author and journalist Liz Kliewer Black of Washington, D.C., will reminisce growing up in western Kansas. Those experiences are detailed in her award-winning book.

— April 10 — "Gracia's Lessons from the Jungle." Well-known author and former Aby Sayyaf hostage Gracia Burnham of Rose Hill, has been an inspiration to thousands across America. (Coffee will be served at 9:30 a.m., followed by the program at 10 a.m.)

— April 17 — "The Springs of Kansas." Rex Buchanan, associate director of the Kansas Geological Survey located in Lawrence, will give an illustrated lecture on this amazing source of water.

— April 24 — "Hiebert Dulcimers Etc." Robert and Eddie Hiebert of Abilene, who have given more than 1,400 musical performances, including a special one for former President George H. and Barbara Bush, will share their musical talents.

— May 1 — "Getting Closer to Us Everyday: South Asia." Having lived most of his life in India, sociologist Dr. Paul Wiebe of Coralville, Iowa, will speak about the potential of the region.
