Tabor student found dead

An 18-year-old Tabor College student died Saturday in his dorm room.

According to college officials, Mason Wedel, a freshman from Buhler, died in his sleep during the early Saturday morning hours.

A soccer player, college officials were alerted when Wedel missed a bus for a soccer game late Saturday afternoon and did not later appear at the game.

According to the Marion County Sheriff's office, a 911 call was received by dispatch at 7:32 p.m. Saturday reporting an unresponsive male.

Marion County Sheriff's office, Hillsboro Police Department, Hillsboro Emergency Medical Services, and county coroner JoAnn Knak responded to the call. Wedel was pronounced dead in his dormitory room.

A preliminary investigation has not revealed any obvious reason for the death. An autopsy had been performed without any conclusive results.

The sheriff's office and Hillsboro Police Department continue to investigate.

Services will be held at 9:30 a.m. today (Wednesday) at Buhler East Cemetery. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. at Buhler Mennonite Brethren Church.

Survivors include his parents, Dwight and Dixie Wedel; brothers Taylor and Parker; sister Elsie; and grandparents Florene Wedel, and Richard Yoder.
