Tagalongs get head start in 4-H

Nine 4-H Tagalongs participated Friday in a rocket project at Marion City Building.

Tagalongs are those children ages five and six who are too young to join 4-H but can experience 4-H projects. Children must be at least seven years old to be a 4-H member.

Daniel Goentzel and Katie Whitaker of Marion presented the program and helped the group assemble foam rockets. The rockets were launched at a later date.

Goentzel, a Marion High School junior, and Whitaker, an MHS senior, are longtime 4-H members.

"I went to my first 4-H meeting when I was six weeks old," Goentzel said. He had older siblings in 4-H and "tagged along" to meetings and events.

Twenty-four children are enrolled in the countywide Tagalong program.

"It gives them a chance to explore all of the projects," said Whitaker, and at least touch base with all of them.

The youngsters can exhibit projects at the county fair and receive participation ribbons.

Each 4-H club can set up their own programs and some countywide programs also are available.

The Tagalong program works in conjunction with the Exploring 4-H program, also available for new members.
