Talented golfers show off at Marion

Sports reporter

Marion High School golf team managed to escape the bad weather again this past week when it was able to play host to two tournaments.

The first was the Marion County invitational May 1. The Warriors took advantage of their home course en route to a 24-stroke victory against second place SE of Saline.

Friday's tournament proved to be tougher.

In the only 36-hole tournament in the state, MHS managed to finish second out of 16 teams by shooting a four-man score of 627.

The tournament was 18 holes at Hillsboro and 18 at Marion Country Club. The 308 at Hillsboro was the lowest score for a Rex Ostmeyer-coached team.

"That was a phenomenal score at Hillsboro," Ostmeyer said. "I couldn't have been more pleased."

Luke Gordon led Marion in Hillsboro with a round of 74, and Travis Hett was right behind him with a 75. Overall, Hett was sixth after shooting a 75 at Marion. His total of 149 was just three strokes behind champion Brian Walker of 4A Topeka-Hayden.

Gordon finished ninth overall after shooting an 81 in the afternoon at Marion, giving him a total of 155.

Ostmeyer didn't think fatigue played a big factor during the tournament that is twice as long as a normal meet.

"They were a little tired," he said. "But I was still pleased."

Overall scores for Marion were:

Travis Hett - 75 Hillsboro, 74 Marion.

Luke Gordon - 74 H, 81 M.

Jake Bredemeier - 79 H, 81 M.

Keith Jones - 86 H, 83 M.

Chase Carlson - 83 H, 85 M.

Lindsay Hett - 98 H, 109 M.

Marion Co. invite

Ostmeyer got what he was looking for May 1 at the Marion County invitational when Jones stepped it up for the Warriors, shooting a 77, good enough for second place behind his teammate Hett.

"I have been harping on being consistent," Ostmeyer said.

Mainly because he knows if Hett can shoot in the low 70s, and the rest of his four-man team be in the low to mid-80s, his team can compete. If one steps up as Jones did and shoots in the 70s, they can beat anyone in 3A.

It also helped that Carlson shot a season-best 82 and earned a sixth-place medal. Gordon was one stroke ahead to finish fifth.

As a team they were right where Ostmeyer wants them to be after shooting 316.

"If we can reach 320 or lower," he said, "we are playing up to our potential."

The Mid-Central Activities Association tournament at Hoisington the Warriors were supposed to play Monday was rained out.

Hoisington cannot host any other day, so Ostmeyer said the league is looking for a replacement school to host the tournament before the end of the week.

MHS will compete Monday in regionals at Hillsboro.
