Tampa: Exchange trip with Tampa, Fla., is this weekend

Jeff and Amber Fisher will come from Tampa, Fla., this weekend, while Jim and Mary Clemmer fly from here to Tampa, Fla. The Fishers are alternates for the winner of the slogan contest sponsored by KFLA, who were unable to come at this time. Jerry and Jeanne Rziha and Julie will be their hosts. Around 40 people have made reservations for the luncheon in Fishers' honor at noon Saturday at Butch's Diner. Centre fifth and sixth grade students will entertain at the potluck supper at 5:30 p.m. Saturday. The students will sing, and the sixth graders will display their Kansas Day projects. Everyone is invited to the potluck. Bring table service.

Jim Srajer and Cole took Philothea Snell Monday to the airport at Wichita. She was returning to her home in Florida after spending several weeks here visiting her sister, Tillie Hein. Philothea and Tillie were guests Sunday evening of Jim and Kris Srajer, Grant and Cole for a farewell supper.

Amanda Kleiber and friend Bill of Manhattan were Sunday evening visitors of her grandmother, Leona Kleiber.

The Red Hat Ladies attended the Tri-County Historical Society soup dinner Sunday at the Herington community building. Three of their members, Karolyn Schlesener, Alice Bell, and Liz Monnington were workers at the dinner. Others attending were Rose Mary Deines, Helen Sorenson, Betty Schlesener, Phyllis Allen, Barbara Askew, Adeline Bernhardt, Leona Kleiber, Rhea Kolling, and Dee Duggan. Most of the group went to the home of Rose Mary after dinner to play cards. Tom Duggan and Deb and Kaylee joined the group at the dinner.

Adeline Bernhardt visited Saturday afternoon with Bonnie Crandall.

Reuben and Lucille Kerbs went to Abilene Saturday afternoon to watch their granddaughter, Taylor Thompson, play basketball. Doug and Connie Thompson and Allison also were present, and all went out to eat after the game.

Jeanne Rziha took Kristine Jirak, Amanda Bina, and Julie Rziha Saturday to Wichita for a Catholic youth retreat.

Frank and Anna Mae Stika and Lori Moldenhauer went to Manhattan Saturday for dinner out and to attend the junior high basketball tournament.

Reuben and Lucille Kerbs attended the sixth grade basketball tournament Saturday morning at Marion. Their grandson, Rustyn Kerbs, played on the Centre team which took first place in the tournament. Russ and Julie Kerbs also were in their son's cheering section.

Adeline Bernhardt visited Friday afternoon with Milda Krauter at Marion Manor in Marion.

Tom and Lori Moldenhauer attended the swap meet Friday in Wichita.

Leona Kleiber visited Thursday with Bonnie Crandall. Elaine Backhus also was there.

Valerie Hampton visited Friday afternoon with her mother, Lois Sklenar.

Martha Melcher visited Thursday afternoon with Tillie Hein and Philothea Snell.

Lutheran Women's Missionary League met Wednesday evening at the church. Pastor Clark Davis led the topic. Joyce Medley had opening and closing devotions. Edna Backhus was hostess. Others present were Adeline Bernhardt, Leona Kleiber, Betty Mueller, and Elaine Backhus.

Nicholas Kleiber was a Wednesday supper guest of his grandmother, Leona Kleiber.

Adeline Bernhardt spent from Jan. 30 to Feb. 2 with Carl and Kathy Hubbard of Wellington. Additional supper guests were Clinton Hubbard of Dallas, Texas, and Donna Hubbard and Andrea King of Wellington. On the way home Adeline met Milda Krauter at Newton Medical Clinic where she had a doctor's appointment.

Jane Vajnar plans to attend Tabor College's Learning in Retirement programs on Monday mornings for the next 10 weeks. News needs to be submitted by Sunday afternoon.

Tampa Community Association met Monday evening to finalize plans for an exchange of visits with Tampa, Fla., to take place Feb. 11-13. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Allen of Brandon, Fla., will come here while Mayor Jim and Mary Clemmer go to Florida. Allen received the trip as a prize in a contest sponsored by KFLA, a Tampa radio station. He submitted the winning slogan for the Tampa Bay area, "Paradise Under Construction." Jerry and Jeanne Rziha and Julie will be hosts to the Allens. Activities will include farm visits, a historical tour, Centre's homecoming basketball game, and a Saturday evening community potluck supper. There also will be a noon luncheon Saturday at Butch's Diner. Call Carla Hajek by Thursday for reservations.

Tom and Dee Duggan were among those attending a reception at Durham Baptist Church Sunday afternoon in celebration of Irvin Christiansen's 90th birthday. A number of other Tampa people also were in attendance.

Sunday dinner guests of Frank and Anna Mae Stika were Ronnie and Lisa Hanschu, James and Anna and Tom and Lori Moldenhauer and Nikki.

Janie Rziha presented a program Sunday afternoon at Hope sponsored by the altar society of Saint Philip's Catholic Church. She talked about her mission trip to Guatemala last year.

Reuben Kerbs and Eric Akers of Wichita and Russ and Julie Kerbs and Rustyn were Sunday after-church visitors of Reuben and Lucille Kerbs.

Don and Carolyn Srajer of Omaha, Neb., spent from Thursday to Tuesday with Tillie Hein and Philothea Snell. Additional Sunday dinner guests were Ron and Dolores Scott of Emporia, Bill and Pamela Fillmore of Cottonwood Falls, and Jim and Kris Srajer, Grant and Cole.

Gary and Carole Spohn and Georgia Spohn met Ryan Spohn of Manhattan Saturday in Junction City for dinner out. They also paid a brief visit to Steve Spohn at work.

Weekend guests of Jerry and Jeanne Rziha and Julie were Wayne and Shannon Rziha, Cecilia and Anthony of Tulsa, Okla., Janie Rziha, John and Jeanne Rziha, Michael, Christopher, Joseph, Timothy, and Thomas of Atchison, Diane Herron, Andrew and Peter of Solomon, and Cecilia Rziha of Hays. David Rziha and Caterina Rozman met them Friday evening at Abilene where they attended the wedding of David Whitehair and Jenny Hoffman.

Peggy Kleiber was a Saturday morning visitor of Leona Kleiber.

Reuben and Lucille Kerbs went to Marion Saturday morning for the sixth grade basketball game between Centre and Marion II team. Their grandson, Rustyn Kerbs played.

Adeline Bernhardt, Leona Kleiber, and Peggy Kleiber attended the annual Kansas Day program Friday afternoon at Centre. Nicholas Kleiber was one of the participants.

Reuben and Lucille Kerbs also attended the Kansas Day program at Centre. Rustyn Kerbs was in the program.

Tom and Dee Duggan visited Mary Christiansen Wednesday at the assisted living center in Marion.

Leona Kleiber and Adeline Bernhardt enjoyed dinner out Thursday in Salina.

Virgil and Kathy Kroupa of Wichita, Marty Kroupa, Tillie Hein, and Philothea Snell were dinner guests Jan. 25 of Edmond and Mary Lou Kroupa.

Nicholas Kleiber was a supper guest Wednesday evening of Leona Kleiber.

Jane Vajnar went to Marion Jan. 25. She made brief visits to Gene Costello at Marion Manor and Dorman and Mary Helen Becker and Mary Christiansen at the assisted living center.

Jack and Sharon Grosse of Peabody, Leona Kleiber, and Adeline Bernhardt joined Milda Krauter Jan. 25 for the family potluck at Marion Manor.

Haywood to meet with veterans at health department

Richard Haywood, Veterans' Service Representative for the Kansas Commission on Veterans' Affairs will be at the health department from 1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Veterans, their dependents, or survivors who have received an Eligibility Verification Report form, or an inquiry from the Department of Veterans' Affairs, should contact him for assistance.

Moran sponsors

benefit increase

Congressman Jerry Moran sponsored legislation that will increase financial assistance paid to families of soldiers killed in service in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Currently, when a serviceman is killed in the line of duty, surviving family members receive $12,420 for assistance with immediate family needs.

Moran's legislation increases the benefit to $100,000 and is retroactive to servicemen killed while serving in active duty since Sept. 11, 2001.

Tabor's LRP begins Monday

Tabor College Learning in Retirement Program will begin its spring semester at 10 a.m. Monday with Bruce Jost, Hillsboro, presenting "Ukraine: Politics, Basketball, and the Gospel." Dr. Richard Kyle, a spring 2000 Fulbright Scholar in the Ukraine, will begin the hour with a brief update on the political situation in the country. Coffee will be served at 9:30 a.m.

Older adults are invited to attend these events which are held in Wohlgemuth Music Education Center. Enrollment is $15 per person a semester, $27 per couple, or $4 per session. First-time visitors will be admitted free of charge. An optional lunch for registrants is offered for $3.
