The women from this area found their guide especially talented as he described the history of the state as depicted by the murals on the walls of the capitol building and supplemented his presentation with songs from the various periods of Kansas history.

Governor Kathleen Sibelius welcomed the Red Hatters at 1 p.m., followed by a group photo. Kolling rose to the challenge of climbing the 296 steps to the top of the capitol dome. The women's husbands, Joe Cox, Everett Kolling, and Tom Duggan wore red drivers' hats, which created a lot of attention in spite of being outnumbered 100-to-one by the women's chapeaus. After leaving the capitol, the Coxes, Kollings, and Duggans enjoyed a tour of WIBW's broadcasting facility led by the Kollings' son, Tim Kolling.
