Tampa gets shelter for collection boxes

Workmen were busy in Tampa this past week constructing a three-sided enclosure for the outside collection boxes installed several years ago by the U.S. Postal Service.

"It wasn't quite what they wanted, but it's a little better," said Eugene Wilson, foreman for Bratton Bros. Contracting Inc., Kansas City.

"I guess this is it," said Tampa resident Leona Kleiber. "It's too bad because everyone worked so hard on it."

She was referring to efforts by a community group to get a new post office after the building housing the post office was judged unusable in 2003.

"It makes me sick," said Dee Duggan, one of that group.

Mayor Jim Clemmer said he is not quite ready to give up yet. He plans to pursue the matter a while longer.

Ed Belton, a rural Tampa resident, looked at it positively.

"It's better than what we had," he said.

The shelter provides room for collection boxes along two walls and a bulletin board on the other.
