The Technology Excellence in Education Network which links the five school districts in Marion County plus the Herington school district in Dickinson County recently received a Kan-Ed grant of $241,985 to upgrade the system and replace equipment in ITV classrooms in each of the schools.

The system will be changed from analog to digital, providing a more easily accessible connection to other parts of Kansas as well as the world.

TEEN director Chris Moddelmog said the old system still worked well, but it was becoming more difficult to find replacement parts for the equipment.

"The rest of the world is going digital," he said, "and the new system will be easier for teachers to operate."

The TEEN network is linked by four pairs of underground fiber optic cables, but only two pairs are used by the schools. One pair is leased to Galaxy Cablevision. The fourth pair is not in use.

According to Moddelmog, TEEN is seeking to find a company to lease the available pair of cables and solicit other local entities such as Tabor College, hospitals, and libraries to connect to it and provide Internet access to their services.

Moddelmog said Tabor College and Hillsboro Medical Center have expressed an interest.

"I'm excited about this opportunity. I see numerous potential benefits," he said.

Moddelmog is leaving TEEN after one year as director. He will be working at Smoky Hill Education Service Center in Salina providing technology training and consulting.
