TEEN transfers ITV property to school districts

At the June meeting of the TEEN (Technology Excellence in Education) board of directors, members passed resolutions to transfer ownership of ITV equipment to the school districts in which they are located.

The resolutions apply to new property acquired in 2006 as well as property being replaced.

TEEN director Chris Moddelmog said the action makes sense because, although the property was acquired in the name of TEEN, the funds to do so would not have been available had districts not transferred their grant awards to TEEN.

A $49,000 grant was received in February from Kan-ed, and another grant totaling $241,985 was received June 2 for the purpose of upgrading ITV equipment from analog to digital.

Each district will assume responsibility for securing, maintaining, and insuring the new equipment, as well as finding other uses for, storing, or disposing of the old equipment.

According to Moddelmog, Cytek Media Systems, Topeka, plans to remove the old equipment and install the new equipment during the last week of July and first few days of August.

In other actions, the board:

— approved transfer of a fiber lease from Galaxy Cable to Eagle Communications effective July 1.

— approved a class sharing policy which will allow other school districts around the state to participate in TEEN courses. The policy stipulates class size, number of remote locations, student contracts, and course fees.

— approved an updated document on TEEN policy and history.

— authorized the TEEN director to spend up to $245,000 in Kan-ed grant and TEEN money to upgrade the ITV studios to digital systems.

— approved an agreement with Hillsboro USD 410 for the district to provide office support and clerk and treasurer services for TEEN during the 2006-07 fiscal year. The agreement is similar to one in effect at present.

Moddelmog noted the position of TEEN technical director has been vacant since June 1. He said district superintendents are leaving it up to the new executive director, Shelli Elliott, to decide how the technical director responsibilities should be handled.

Elliott will replace Moddelmog July 1.

The next TEEN board meeting will be held at 7 p.m. July 19 at Marion USD's central office.
