Ten Warriors take up 11 spots on MCAA all-league teams years ago

Ten Marion High School players were selected for the Mid-Central Activities Association all-league teams.

Running back Austin Hager led the way by earning first-team honors, as well as second-team defensive honors for his play as a linebacker.

The senior rushed for 692 yards and seven touchdowns in just six games.

On defense he recorded 10 total tackles, one for a loss, and returned an interception for a touchdown.

Fellow seniors honored by the league include Hank Collett, Brett Billings, and Chase Carlson.

Collett received first-team honors as an offensive lineman, playing hurt for most of the season, and Carlson's 52 total tackles, one fumble recovery, five pass breaks, and two interceptions earned him first-team honors as a defensive back.

Although not named to any all-league teams, he also led the team with 12 catches for 232 yards, and three touchdowns as a wide receiver.

Brett Billings, who played the offensive and defensive lines, tabbed second-team honors for his offensive play.

Juniors Mitchell Leppke and Brad Klenda were the final first-team recipients from the Warriors.

Leppke, in his second year as quarterback, completed 25-62 passes for 327 yards and three touchdowns. More impressively he was second on the team with 558 rushing yards to go with seven touchdowns.

Klenda led the team with 74 total tackles, 48 solo, and three fumble recoveries. He added a sack and caused a fumble for good measure.

Nick Klenda, the lone Warrior sophomore honored, had 37 solo tackles to go along with 27 assisted. He also had a sack, pass break, tackle for a loss, and an interception during his second-team all-league season.

A trio of juniors in Matt Thierolf, Derek Riggs, and Mark Kukuk round out the final second-team honorees for MHS.

Thierolf, who missed one game with an illness, still had 48 total tackles, one for a loss, an interception, and a fumble recovery.

Kukuk, one of the smallest players on the field, didn't seem to mind as he finished the season with 40 total tackles, three for a loss, one sack, and two fumble recoveries.

Riggs had 46 total tackles, 36 solo, while he tied for the team high with Billings in tackles for a loss with five.
