LETTERS:   The rest of the story years ago

To the Editor:

In regard to the article on the Marion County Emergency Food Bank from the paper recently, I feel "the rest of the story" needs to be told.

The Food Bank is a service sponsored by Church Women United of Marion, though housed at Valley United Methodist Church. The CWU officers have considerable responsibility for the operation of the Food Bank in addition to the storing and physical restocking by Erna Mae Yeagley noted in the article in question.

The CWU president, Janet Bryant, handles the paperwork necessary to its operation: reports to the government about the commodities received and distributed, the recruiting and scheduling of volunteers who man the Food Bank each week, etc. When clients need assistance outside the Food Bank hours of service, Janet calls on volunteers to provide service to them as needed or goes in herself.

The CWU treasurer, Betty Thompson, receives and records all cash donations and reimburses Carlsons' Grocery for the $25 vouchers issued each month for items not available: perishables, baby items, etc. There also are volunteers who pick up donations from local collection points, the commodities from the central distribution point and, I would guess, a number of others about whom I know nothing.

In my opinion, such a major service to the citizens of Marion County deserves more complete recognition than your article provided. Thank you, however, for the notice given to this fine service to our community.
