Three Warriors qualify for state track

Three Marion High School Warriors qualified for the state track meet following their competition Friday at the regional meet at Cheney.

For the second year in a row, Casey Nelson qualified for pole vault competition, finishing fourth with a jump of 13 feet six inches.

"We think the pole vault will be the marquee event at the state meet, with at least 12 vaulters over 13 feet," said head coach Grant Thierolf. "It should be a great event to watch."

Nelson will compete at 6:15 Friday.

Jessica DeForest qualified in the 3200-meter run, with a time of 12 minutes 54.14 seconds.

"DeForest has been a steady influence on young distance runners," said Thierolf. "She qualified as part of a relay team before, but this is her first qualification as an individual."

DeForest runs at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.

Gavin Moore was the final state qualifier, placing third in the 3200m run with a time of 10:53.86.

"Gavin has overcome some leg problems . . . but ran a strong race," Thierolf summarized. "This is his first time in the state track meet and we look forward to seeing what he can do in great competition.

Moore runs at 8:45 a.m. Saturday.

Thierolf said he is sad to say goodbye to the seniors.

"Dallas Wells ran well," Thierolf said, "but came up against some very good competition."

Steven Boone and Tyler Smith both threw good enough to place in the shot put and discus, but did not qualify for state.

"Sarah Regier struggled in the discus but came through in the shot put and had one of her better days in the event," Thierolf said.

He ended by saying, "We appreciate what these young leaders did for our track team and they can leave Marion High School knowing they have done everything they could do for their school and themselves."
