Time runs out for owners, city will demolish houses

Two dilapidated houses will be demolished.

The decision was made after a public hearing was conducted July 5, prior to a weekly Marion City Commission meeting, regarding property at 1018 Denver Street. A public hearing was held a few weeks prior regarding property at 201 N. Freeborn Street with no improvements being completed as proposed.

The property on Freeborn Street belongs to Michael and Callie Hultberg.

Owners of the property at 1018 Denver Street are Donald and Helena Marques Jr..

City attorney Dan Baldwin told the commission he had received a telephone call from Helena Marques of Florida. She said the couple was in the process of divorcing and Donald was in control of the property.

Mayor Martin Tice asked building inspector Marty Fredrickson if the status of the property had changed.

Fredrickson responded there had been no improvements completed since April 22.

Baldwin reported no liens of record were found against either property but he would conduct another search since time had lapsed since the first search.

He recommended the Denver and Freeborn properties be considered for demolition after Aug. 16, the original deadline for the required improvement, and would give sufficient time for the owners to be notified.

The commission agreed with Baldwin's recommendations and approved a resolution at the July 5 meeting pertaining to the Hultberg property.

A second resolution pertaining to the Marques property will be considered at next Monday's meeting.

If required improvements are not completed before the August deadline, the city will demolish the properties and charge the landowners the costs.
