Timeline of Marion city adminstrators

— Jan. 1, 1998: City of Marion facilitator Diane Hett is named city administrator. She is appointed by mayor Jack Regnier, and commissioners Jim Crofoot and Larry Reiswig.

Regnier was quoted in the Jan. 7, 1998, edition of the Marion County Record as saying, "This position is not to be confused with a city manager. She will gather information for the commission, provide administrative supervision for all departments, and implement policies that are determined by the commission."

— June 15, 1998: Hett resigns as city administrator, effective July 5.

— July 22, 1998: Dennis Nichols is hired as new city administrator and will begin Aug. 17.

— Aug. 26, 2002: Nichols resigns as city administrator, effective Sept. 12. Marion Police Chief David Mayfield is named interim administrator because he is on leave for three months because of a shoulder injury. Michel Soyez is named interim police chief.

— Aug. 26, 2002: Marion City Commission decides to hire the League of Kansas Municipalities to conduct a search for a city administrator at a cost of $1,875 plus advertising.

— Sept. 9, 2002: The commission signs a six-month contract with the league.

— Oct. 28, 2002: Mayfield is formally appointed as city administrator and Soyez as police chief. It is stated in the Oct. 30, 2002, edition of the Record that Mayfield can return to the position of police chief if the city administrator position didn't work out.
