The Kansas Department on Aging is observing its 30th anniversary this year.

Tom Duggan of Tampa is the new representative for Senior Citizens of Marion County. He replaces Howard Collett.

Duggan retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 2001 after 38 years. His job as he sees it is to work on things that will benefit seniors and to keep watch on legislation before state lawmakers to prevent any negative impact on seniors.

In his new role, Duggan is spending three days this week in Topeka. On Tuesday, at the Capitol Plaza Hotel, he participated in an organizational meeting of the Silver Haired Legislature. They elected a speaker, speaker pro tem, and floor leader.

Today and Thursday, he is taking part in the annual Governor's Conference on Aging Services.

In addition to senior citizen representatives, the conference is directed at service professionals in aging, mental and physical health, social work, family care-giving, and elder housing.

Also included are academicians, representatives of faith-based groups, government officials, and legislators.
