Tragedy gleans perspective

With the issues at hand regarding our city, we cannot forget our neighbors to the west and the ordeal they are suffering after losing homes, businesses, and lives.

A two-mile-wide tornado literally sucked the town of Greensburg off the map, leaving toothpick boards and shredded memories. What made matters worse was the townspeople couldn't return to their residences to sift through the remains of their lives until Monday, after a weekend of torrential rains.

Can you imagine not only losing everything you own — photographs, baby's first tooth, mother's pearls, and son's first woodworking project — but the grocery store, banks, schools, electrical poles, water supply, and cell phone towers? And that doesn't even include the pain of knowing some of your neighbors and friends were killed or injured.

Wow. Makes our problems here in Marion seem pretty insignificant in the grand scheme of things, doesn't it?
