Transfer station roof repairs will be sought

Staff reporter

A local contractor will be contacted regarding roof repairs at Marion County transfer station.

David Brazil, transfer station manager, reported Friday to Marion County Commission that architect Dan Hall had met with Brazil and inspected the building.

Hall said the county didn't need to hire a structural engineer since the county had identified the problem and solution regarding necessary repairs to part of the transfer station roof.

Funds were budgeted for 2005 for building repairs at the site. The commission and Brazil stated concerns regarding the condition of the roof and if more damage would occur because of winter weather.

Estimated expenses were $10,000 to $15,000, Brazil said.

Commissioner Howard Collett asked if ready-made steel trusses with gutters would be a remedy. The trusses would support a structure above the existing roof.

Brazil suggested replacing the roof with metal materials instead of the rubber compound currently in place.

The commission instructed Brazil to contact Flaming Metal Systems.

Brazil also reported Jack Chappelle, consulting engineer for closure of the county landfill, had responded to the commission's request about burning the area around the landfill instead of mowing.

Chappelle made contact with Kansas Department of Health and Environment and was informed of potential health hazards with burning refuse located in the tall grass.

Brazil said he had checked and the cost of renting a bush hog-type mower was between $300 and $400.

Concerns about insurance were discussed if the project were contracted outside of the county.

The commission authorized Brazil to lease the necessary equipment to mow the property with county employees operating the equipment.

In other business:

— County clerk Carol Maggard reported on behalf of county emergency medical services director Darryl Thiesen a request to take bids on a first responder unit.

The Ramona-based van was returned to the county because of lack of personnel in Ramona to operate it.

Emergency equipment was removed from the vehicle.

The vehicle is a 1979 Ford one-ton van with a 460 engine and 30,000 miles.

The commission instructed bids to be solicited for the vehicle.

— Two board members, Evan Yoder of Hillsboro and Verna Ploutz of Marion, were approved to serve on Marion County Mental Health Authority.

— The commission approved the following administrative business: a release of mortgage on commercial property for a defaulted county microloan, a resolution acknowledging the viewing of a road this past Monday regarding a road vacation, and a release of CRP (conservation reserve program) ground near the county landfill site.

— Maggard reported $6,557 remained in outstanding vouchers for 2004. These funds were earmarked in December to be expended in 2004.

— Sales tax revenue for July was slightly lower than previous years at $38,948. In 2003, July sales were $41,266. Maggard said revenue still was ahead of last year with the county collecting $51,779 more this year than this time in 2003.

— The commission approved $587,792 in payroll and vouchers.

The next commission meeting will be 9 a.m. Monday in the courthouse. The commission did not meet this past Monday.
