Truck, driver considered for hauling county refuse

Marion County Transfer Station Manager Rollin Schmidt asked the commission Monday if it wanted him to research costs associated with hauling.

Currently, the county has a contract with Robinson Trucking of Florence. To date, through June, the county has paid Robinson Trucking $57,834 of the $130,000 budgeted. To date, $9,256 has been paid for a fuel surcharge with $14,910 budgeted.

It costs the city $2.10 per loaded mile plus a fuel surcharge for the 144-mile one-way trip to the Topeka landfill, said Schmidt.

Schmidt said Harvey County has its own truck and driver to haul solid waste to Hutchinson.

Commissioner Bob Hein instructed Schmidt to look at benefits for a driver — health insurance, KPERS, etc.

— Schmidt reported tires needed to be purchased for a skid steer loader.

Estimates were obtained from Don's Tires of Abilene, Mike's Service Center of Marion, and Rod's Tires of Hillsboro.

Mike's Service Center had the low bid of $708 each for Galaxy Hulk tires. Rod's Tires presented a bid of $800 each and Don's Tires had a bid of $900.
