Two killed in fiery crash on U.S-50 years ago

Two men were killed Monday afternoon in a fiery four-vehicle crash on U.S.-50, three miles east of Peabody.

According to witnesses, a westbound semi tanker truck failed to stop in a construction zone, and collided with the back of a pickup truck in which the two men were riding, causing the pickup to explode.

The semi then hit a Ford Taurus, sending it to the south ditch. The pickup truck was pushed under a semi trailer that was in front of the car.

Both the driver and the passenger in the pickup died at the scene. Mexico tags were reportedly on the pickup truck.

The driver of the second semi was not injured. Drivers of the tanker truck and car were taken to St. Luke Hospital, Marion, where they were both treated and released.

The names of the victims have not been released.

This was the second double fatality accident in a construction zone on U.S.-50 in less than two months.

On May 10, Brandi Billbe and Lori Leeders both of Marion were fatally injured in another four-vehicle accident in a construction zone on U.S.-50 in Harvey County, near the Marion County line. Billbe's daughter, Ashley, was seriously injured in the crash and is continuing to recover.

Kansas Department of Transportation and other officials were on the scene Tuesday continuing the accident investigation.
