Unresolved zoning issues are discussed

Marion County Zoning Administrator David Brazil and county commissioners Dan Holub and Randy Dallke discussed lot sizes and whether lot splits will be allowed for housing development during Monday's commission meeting.

Dallke said Harvey County was considering a housing development near Halstead with similar concerns as Marion County.

Holub reiterated that zoning is about people, not land, and there seems to be too much government intervention, telling people what to do with their property.

"It's a conflict of philosophies," said Brazil. "Planning is about the good of many and not the good for a few."

Brazil reported Marion County Planning Commission discussed the possibility of conducting a marketing analysis to determine the cost of rural development. Holub said the county didn't need marketing studies by people who don't know what's going on here.

The planning commission also will recommend the acreage remain at five acres for new houses instead of a reduction to three acres per the county commission's request.

The planning commission also supports the LESA (Land Evaluation and Site Assessment) system as it currently is being used.

Brazil explained that there is a difference between a residence that supports an agriculture operation and a residence that's just a residence.
