Coach Russ Hake said his team was playing better basketball toward the end of the season.

He said the team let some games get away from them early in the season, which was disappointing.

"If we could have won some of those games, we might have had a better chance in the regionals," he said. "Olpe was a tough draw.

"Overall, I felt the team was capable of going 500, but it's a tough league and it didn't work out that way."

The CHS girls' team ended the 2005-06 season with a record of 17-7 after losing to St. Paul in the semifinals of the 1A sub-state tournament at El Dorado.

They won the Eisenhower League tournament and were runner-up in the Herington pre-season and Burrton regional tournaments.

Despite being injured in the semi-finals of the regional tournament, unable to play in the championship game, and scoring just four points in the sub-state game against St. Paul, junior Selena Seifert racked up a total of 309 points for the season, scoring 39 percent from the field and 59 percent from the free-throw line. She was followed by junior Alyssa Luna with 184 points.

Megan Gutsch, another junior, led in rebounds with 170. Luna had 157. Luna and senior Jenna Beneke produced the most blocked shots, Luna, 32, and Beneke, 29.

The other two seniors had less playing time. Beneke compiled 49 points, 73 rebounds, seven assists, and six steals. Ashley Griffith compiled 28 points, 39 rebounds, two blocks, two charges, 16 assists, and 20 steals.

Coach Greg Wyatt was pleased with his team's overall performance.

"We met our goals for the year by holding our opponents to 40 points or less and averaging 50 points or more a game," he said.

The team averaged 53.6 points a game and held their opponents to an average of 40.3 points a game.

Wyatt is optimistic about the future of the team. Eighteen of the 22 players are returning. The junior varsity compiled a record of 16-3 on the season, with two of the three losses in games against varsities.

Five or six eighth graders will join the team next fall after their team tied for first in the Tri-County Junior High League.
