USD 408 names contractor in building project years ago

Marion-Florence USD 408 board of education interviewed candidates Thursday during a special meeting for the building contractor position for the district's new building project.

The board approved Hutton Construction of Wichita and construction will begin this fall on the project which includes an indoor pool, gymnasium, and auditorium.

Superintendent Lee Leiker said the board interviewed three candidates during the session, and felt Hutton was the best choice.

"They will begin working to finalize plans to begin looking at a schedule for construction," he said.

As of now the plan is to begin construction around the first of October so the project will be ready for the 2007-08 school year.

In other news:

— The board approved the purchase of a new John Deere tractor for $11,483.22 by a vote of 4-2. Rex Savage and Lyle Leppke voted no.

— The board transferred the balance of its 2006-06 general fund to capital outlay.

Relay for Life offers food, fun, and fellowship

Relay for Life of Marion County will be held from 7 p.m. July 21 to 7 a.m. July 22 at Warrior Stadium, Marion.

A meal will be served from to the public from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. July 21. A $5 donation is suggested.

Survivors will receive a free T-shirt and meal ticket when registered. They also will walk the first lap at 7 p.m.

All teams are expected to have a member or members on the track for the 12-hour period.

Names of cancer victims, living and deceased, will be read at 10 p.m. There will be live entertainment of local talent and drawings throughout the evening.

Prizes include two round-trip Air Tran airline tickets to anywhere in the U.S., gasoline, power tools, Kansas Speedway tickets, Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center passes, and restaurant gift certificates.

Jirak attends national leadership conference

Kristine Jirak, secretary of the Centre FFA chapter, attended the 2006 Washington Leadership Conference June 13-18 in Washington, D.C.

The conference was conducted by the National FFA organization in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Education.

The week-long program was designed to help FFA members improve their leadership skills and prepare for leadership roles in their chapters, communities, and future careers.

Jirak attended workshop sessions on persuasive communication, character leadership, and building relationships, and participated in discussions on citizenship.

She is the daughter of Francis and Mary Jirak of rural Tampa.

Information offered for virtual school

Parents are invited to attend a free information session about education options for their children.

Lawrence Virtual School will provide the information about the school, allow parents to view curriculum, books and materials, witness a demonstration of the academic program, and explain the tuition-free enrollment process for the 2006-07 school year.

All sessions are free and open to the public.

Sessions will be available at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Emporia Public Library, 110 E. Sixth Avenue, Emporia, and at 7 p.m. July 18 at Hyatt Regency Hotel, 400 W. Waterman, Wichita.
