Vernon Goentzel

Vernon Goentzel, 87, died Feb. 5, 2008, at Hillsboro Community Medical Center Long Term Care.

Born March 17, 1920, on the family farm southwest of Marion, he was the son of Peter and Mary (Goertz) Goentzel.

He served with the U.S. Air Corps from 1941-1945. Afterward, he went to work farming with his father.

On Sept. 16, 1949, he married Wanita Ewert.

He began working for the International Harvester store at Marion in 1954, and retired in 1985.

Survivors include his wife, Wanita of Hillsboro; son, John and wife Marlene of Marion; daughters, Jocelyn Classen of Marion and Rose Mary Loewe and husband Craig of Colorado Springs, Colo.; brother, Ben Goentzel of Durham; sister, Ruth Goentzel of Hillsboro; and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services were conducted Feb. 9 at Eastmoor United Methodist Church, Marion, with the Rev. Mike Eurit officiating.

Burial was in Hillsboro Mennonite Brethren Cemetery with full military rites.

A memorial fund has been established with the Kansas Society for Crippled Children.
