Volunteers plan fireworks at lake

Firefighters from Marion County fire departments are planning another fund-raiser during Labor Day weekend.

The afternoon of fun and evening of fireworks will be held Sept. 4 at Marion County Park & Lake.

Children's games will be begin at 2 p.m. A meal will be served at the lake hall from 5 to 8 p.m. or until the food uns out. The menu will include pulled pork, bratwursts, hot dogs, beans, and chips.

Drawings will be held for a Henry lever-action .22 rifle, a stay in a local bed and breakfast, and some lucky child will win the opportunity to ride in a fire truck to the fireworks detonation area and push a button to start the first fireworks.

The rifle is on display at Marion Auto Supply, 115 E, Main, Marion. Chances are $5 each or 5 for $20.

The fireworks display will begin at dusk.

Jim Cloutier of Shawmar Oil & Gas Company, again will donate funds to cover the expenses of the events.

The event is an effort to assist community and rural fire departments. Cloutier knows funding is limited.

"These (fire departments) seem to be areas that have a lack of funds," Cloutier said. "These people are out there volunteering to protect our lives and livelihoods. We want to give back to these people who help us."

Cloutier said this year's fireworks display will have larger aerials.

"We'll put on a good show for county residents and visitors," said Cloutier.

All donations for the food and drawings will be used for pump and hose testing equipment.
