At least 28 people turned out Friday and Saturday at Lincolnville to assist with pouring and finishing flooring for the new community building.

According to committee member Jane Pigorsch, the former record for the most volunteers working at one time on a Kanstep project was 26.

Cement was poured in less than two hours early in the day on both Friday and Saturday. The rest of the day was spent smoothing and finishing the concrete and inserting anchor bolts.

Pigorsch said individuals from high school age to senior citizens came around to do whatever they could.

The work was supervised by Shane Holthaus of Kansas Rural Water Association.

Pigorsch noted that Cary Granzow, the agriculture instructor at Centre High School, is enthusiastic about the project and encouraged his students to volunteer.

Dave Hett of Hett Construction gave up two days of his own work to furnish a power trowel, concrete tools, and labor to finish the concrete. He brought along Thomas Schrag, one of his employees.

Agri Producers, Inc., granted local manager Perry Gutsch a day off to help with the project. Bankers Bob and Kurt Spachek also were on hand. They said they see the project as helping the town survive.

Don Buethe has difficulty walking but he did what he could from his mule.

Gail Burns and Betty Frobenius provided refreshments for the workers.

Other volunteers were Thomas Carrasco, Kenneth Nienstedt, Warren Barton, Dave Schneider, Victor and Travis Burns, the Glenn Carlson family, Bryant Gutsch, Steve and Anita Svoboda, Josh Ryff.

Lee Becker, Corky and Kathy-Beneke Bloom, Bob Kleinschmidt, Brian and Haleigh Owens, Joseph Stroda, Dan Peterson, Gavin Shields, Brent Potocnik, Roger Krause, Bill Harmon, Trent Hajek, and Jeremy Kristek.

After the weekend, Pigorsch, a co-spark plug with Dave Schneider, was bubbling over with enthusiasm and appreciation for the turnout.

"We had a very favorable response," she said.
