LETTERS:   Vote for Barnett years ago

To the Editor:

I want to thank everyone who voted for me in August. I hope I have conducted myself and my campaign in an honorable and trustworthy manner, and that you will support me in future ventures.

However, since I was defeated in the primary race, Marion County now has the choice between Dr. Jim Barnett, a Republican incumbent senator from Emporia, or Sharon Karr, a former Emporia State University professor, also from Emporia.

During the primary campaign, I became familiar with both candidates as well as their policies, and I believe Jim Barnett is the best choice for Marion County.

After the primary election, I discussed with Dr. Barnett his willingness to sponsor a bill to allow Kansans to vote for themselves whether or not to allow homosexual marriage in Kansas. In agreeing to do so, he is the only candidate who supports allowing you to vote.

As a medical doctor, Jim Barnett has the best experience to help keep Marion County hospitals open and to lower prescription drug costs.

Jim Barnett is the only candidate who has worked to keep Medicaid costs down while maintaining adequate health care to those in need.

Jim Barnett has openly discussed the safety of Marion County highways, like U.S.-50, and how to make them safer.

Jim Barnett also is the only pro-life candidate.

In contrast, I still don't know if Sharon Karr is pro-life or pro-choice. I have yet to be told if she supports or opposes Second Amendment rights. I have yet to find out if she supports lower taxes as a way to ensure long-term economic growth in Kansas.

As a former candidate, I have a very specific name for these types of answers . . . politics.

Marion County does not need more politics. We need strong, principled leadership. I encourage everyone to cast their vote for Jim Barnett this Nov. 2.
