Voters will decide some positions in primaries

Voters will eliminate candidates in some key elections during the Aug. 3 primary.

Republican voters from the second county commission district will determine the winner between two Republicans — Max Hayen and Dan Holub, both of Marion. No Democrats have filed for the position.

Marion County Republicans also will determine a U.S. Senator and U.S. Representative from the first district.

Arch Naramore of Lawrence is challenging incumbent Samuel Brownback of Topeka for the Senate seat.

In the state Senate 17th district race, incumbent Jim Barnett is being challenged by former Marion resident James Meier, both of Emporia.

Marion County Democrats have a choice for the Senate seat between Lee Jones of Lenexa and Robert Conroy of Shawnee.

Opposition on the Republican ticket for precinct committee people are:

Colfax Township, committeewoman, Carole Spohn, Tampa, and Peggy Kleiber, Ramona.

Liberty Township, committeewoman, CleoBeth Friesen and Dorene Thiessen, both of Hillsboro.

West Branch Township, committeeman, Theodore Nikkel, Newton, and Merrill Schmidt, Hillsboro. Committeewoman, Joan Nikkel, Newton, and Sandy Schmidt, Hillsboro.

Hillsboro First, committeeman, Bob Hein and Clinton Seibel, both of Hillsboro.

Peabody East, committeeman, James Preheim and Gilbert Loewen, both of Peabody. Committeewoman, Gladys Preheim and Venita Loewen both of Peabody.

Other county elected positions are uncontested.
