Warrior wrestlers experience ups and downs

Sports reporter

Wrestling with three open weight classes and numerous wrestlers out of their normal weight classes didn't help Marion-Florence/Peabody-Burns Thursday at the Smoky Valley quad.

The Warriors lost to Hoisington, Smoky Valley, and Hillsboro at the meet head coach Chad Adkins called "the toughest one of the year."

Adam Regnier was a bright spot for MHS, winning all three matches, including two by pin.

He recorded six of the team's 15 points in a 60-15 defeat against Smoky Valley.

Senior Charlie Holub defeated Jake Coney, 10-8 in overtime, and Derek Riggs picked up the final six points with a pin at the five minute, 46 second mark in the 285-pound match-up.

MFPB gave up 12 more points against Hoisington with open weight classes in a 42-27 loss. In matches actually wrestled the score was 30-27 Cardinals.

Regnier was the top performer again for MFPB, recording a pin in 35 seconds in the 130-pound match.

Freshman Andy Shipman notched his first career victory with a pin at the 3:37 mark in the 125-pound class.

Holub improved to 2-0 with a 5-1 victory at 140 against Zane Sanders, and Tylor Neil pinned Ryan Rodie at 152 in 4:28.

Riggs notched the final six points for Marion with a forfeit victory at 285.

The final match-up of the night was against Hillsboro, and open weight classes were another problem, with six points automatically being awarded to Hillsboro.

After Shipman improved to 2-1 on the day with an 11-3 victory against Dylan Delk, Regnier made the score 12-10 with a pin of Darren Mueller at the 4:25 mark.

Hillsboro won the next three matches, before Neil earned a forfeit victory to make it 24-16.

MFPB wouldn't get any closer.

When Riggs pinned C.J. Shaw in 2:36 in the 285-pound match, it was too late, as the Warriors fell 48-22.

MFPB will be in action twice this week with a double dual at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at Burlington, and the Hesston invite at 10 a.m. Saturday.
